Tell D.C. Government: Save Congress Heights!

Tenants in buildings around the Congress Heights Metro have been forced to live in deplorable conditions simply because they refuse to move to make way for luxury development that would be unaffordable to the vast majority of families who call Congress Heights home. We are holding a call-in day on Monday, December 19, and we need your help to stop displacement and prevent gentrification!

In addition to the four privately owned buildings where tenants live and continue to resist displacement, the D.C. government has a direct hand in a fifth vacant building on the property. This gives them the ability to keep it out of the control of slumlord Sanford Capital and others currently working for the displacement of the Congress Heights tenants.

This building was initially intended to be used as affordable housing for people aging out of the foster care system. The Department of Housing and Community Development gave nearly $1 million to the owners to create this affordable housing, which to date has still never been created, and the nearly $1 million loan has never been paid back.

The D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development should use its power to foreclose on the property, which willshut this new planned development down, and should work with the tenants to ensure that the property is used as was originally intended: for housing that is affordable to Congress Heights residents in need.

Please help the residents and families of Congress Heights by participating in a call-in-day on Monday, December 19 to DHCD to let them know that you do not support the D.C. government working with slumlords like Sanford Capital!

RSVP here and see below for a script you can use when you call. The phone number for the Department of Housing and Community Development is (202) 442-7200. Calling is most effective, but after you call, you can send them an email based on the script below to dhcd@dc.gov and/or tweet at them at @DCDHCD.

I support the residents of Congress Heights in their fight for decent, affordable housing. I am calling to express my concern about 3200 13th Street SE, and want to make it clear that I do not condone my government facilitating development and displacement of residents by slum landlords like Sanford Capital. I do not support the Department of Housing and Community Development working with any landlord with a demonstrated history of negligence of their properties and tenants, or other landlords or developers connected with them in any way. Please foreclose on 3200 13th Street SE and engage the tenants living in the surrounding buildings to make sure that any development on the site is determined by the residents of Congress Heights, and is affordable and beneficial to them. Thank you for hearing my concerns.
