SIGN ON: Solidarity with D.C. Tenants Facing Displacement by Catholic Church!

We recently learned that the Catholic Church is putting several rent control buildings up for sale in the rapidly gentrifying Rhode Island Avenue neighborhood of Northeast Washington, D.C. Justice First and LinkUp are working with tenants in four buildings, some of whom have lived in their units for much of their lives, and are at imminent risk of displacement.

In their letter (click here to download PDF), tenants appeal to all those in solidarity to sign onto to their ask that the Catholic Church to work with them to ensure that their homes and families are protected from displacement and potential homelessness. Sign below in solidarity with the tenants of 636 Girard St. N.E., 628 Girard St. N.E., 1265 Raum St. N.E, and 1364 Bryant St. N.E.

We thank the organizations that have signed on in solidarity with tenants, including:

ANSWER Coalition, Black Lives Matter DC, Brookland Manor/Brentwood Village Residents Association, CODEPINK, Collective Action for Safe Spaces, Dahlgreen Courts Tenants Association, DC for Reasonable Development, Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Community, Empower DC, GW Progressive Student Union, HUResist, Jewish Voice for Peace - DC Metro, Justice First, LinkUp, Metro DC DSA, Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, Party for Socialism and Liberation, People Power Action, Positive Force DC, Socialist Alternative, Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, We Are Family Senior Outreach Network, and YDSA at American University.

Religious teachings should certainly be sufficient to change your policy: from eliminating affordable housing, to actively expanding it. If for some reason that has escaped you, please consider the fact that the Church is a non-profit institution. Your exemption from taxes means that your role in our city is to help people, not to hurt them!

Housing is should be a fundamental right. It is the base of existence. It is the place you lay your baby down to sleep and the where you wake up to start your day. The possibility of not having a pace to call home must be one one the biggest stresses one can go through short of a death of an immediate family member. The worst fact is this can be avoided.

Please reconsider this awful movement. There must be an alternative to save the homes of these families while assisting the strapped, struggling, Catholic Church.

    Thank you,

“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference.”― Elie Wiesel

As a Native Washington and a Roman Catholic, I am appalled by this action of the Shrine.
