We are at a pivotal stage in the fight at Congress Heights. Join us for a community meeting this Sunday, April 9th to learn more about the state of the struggle and how you can get involved in prevent displacement and promoting truly affordable housing in Congress Heights.
We’ve recently learned that the District government has acquired the empty building adjacent to the buildings owned by Sanford that they had been attempting to acquire as a part of their planned development. They plan to sell the property in a public auction.
That means anyone could potentially acquire it, including Sanford or their partner Geoff Griffis. The dangers of this were on full display this past week as the deceptive practices of slumlord Sanford Capital again made news. Washington City Paper detailed the history of lies and double dealing engaged in by Sanford and its principals.
Tenants are confident they have the partners necessary to move ahead with exercising their rights to purchase the buildings. Turning what was going to be mass displacement into an important preservation and expansion of affordable housing in the Congress Heights community which is currently the target of a number of displacement efforts.
Sunday, April 9th join our community meeting where we will discuss these issues and get organized to support Congress Heights tenants.
