This Friday, March 3, D.C. Council will be having an oversight hearing on housing and tenant related issues. Tenants from around the District will be coming to raise their voices against slum conditions and for more, quality, affordable housing. We need you to come to the hearing too!
Our work at Congress Heights has lifted the lid off of slum conditions in the District and how the government works to facilitate both slums and redevelopment projects that result in mass displacement. Over the past few weeks, both Washington City Paper and the Washington Post have run articles detailing this process, with a spotlight on the slumlord at the Congress Heights properties: Sanford Capital. City Paper even discovered that Sanford has given an illegal campaign donation to Muriel Bowser.
As our work and these articles detail, the need for change is urgent. The District refuses to take significant action. The District of Columbia is about to spend $200 million on sports stadiums for ultra-profitable teams. They have given away billions of dollars over the past decade to developers causing displacement and skyrocketing income inequality. Yet when it comes to making sure the resources are there for everyone to have decent housing, regardless of income, District government leaders do nothing but point the finger at someone else.
Friday, tenants from Congress Heights and around the District will be there to testify on this unacceptable state of affairs. We need as many people as possible to join them to show the D.C. government that they must take action now!
